Post-Photo Shoot Aftercare

Everyone is always concerned with photo shoot prep and they don’t realize the effects of makeup and hair styling on your face and hair.
Your makeup looks gorgeous. You are stunned by how beautiful you look and want to keep your makeup on as long as possible even hours after the dozen selfies you took and long after the shoot is over. Problem is that the makeup that was caked on your face is clogging all your pores. Models tend to break out typically after photo shoots due to the fact that the face is getting covered in impurities from brushes that may not be cleaned properly and potentially old makeup.
Solution: Remove the beautiful makeup as quickly as you can. Although it’s pretty, the quicker you remove it the less time you have it clogged up with all that makeup. I recommend using a makeup wipe to remove most of the excess makeup and follow with eye makeup remover and another full facial makeup remover. Then, use a cleanser to clean off any remaining impurities then apply some toner. Most importantly, apply moisturizer to hydrate your skin.
Hairstylists love to experiment during photo shoots with new styles and products to attempt crazy up dos. All this product and heat can severely damage your hair if not done properly or if not taken care properly. You want to avoid breakage of hair follicles and other damage as much as possible.
If your hair was teased, kindly ask the hair stylist, if possible, at the end of the shoot if she can remove as much of the teasing as possible. You can severely break your hair strands if not done the right way. If this is not possible, wash your hair with a ton of conditioner and use a wide-toothed comb in the shower to carefully untangle it.
Don’t leave any hair spray or other chemicals in your hair. Hair follicles are very sensitive and can get damaged very quickly. You should always do a hair conditioning treatment after a lot of product or heat is applied to your hair.

Lip Exfoliation

Now with the cold weather to come, your lips may start to appear dry and cracked. Sometimes, chap-stick doesn’t help to remove the dryness but rather mask it a bit. To remove the dry, dead skin, it is recommended to exfoliate the lips every once in a while so that you can apply lipstick and other lip makeup without the appearance of dry lips.You can make a simple exfoliant with ingredients found at home.

  • Steps:
    • Mix a bit of olive oil or honey with some sugar in a small bowl. You want to have a little bit more of the oil or honey than the sugar and it should be rather pasty.
    • Apply the mixture on your lips and use a washcloth to massage the lips in a circular motion. The length to which you do this is determined on how dry your lips are. The dryer it is, the more time you should spend doing this, however do not scrub too hard or for too long because you may chap them.
    • Rinse the mixture off with warm water.
    • Apply lip balm, chap-stick or Vaseline (petroleum jelly) to seal the moisture in.

    Best part of this is that it is non-toxic; if you swallow a bit of this, it won’t harm you. The oil and honey help moisturize the lips and honey also has anti-bacterial properties that help heal cracked lips. Now your lips are ready to battle the winter-damage!

First-Time Facial

Ever wanted to get a facial but didn’t know how to prepare or care afterwards?

Here are some tips:

  • Before booking a facial you want to make sure you do not have any contradictions to them. IF you are regularly seeing a dermatologist, ask if a facial is recommended if you are getting treatment for a certain skin care problem.
  • If you are getting any radiation or chemotherapy, make sure to ask your doctor if facials may be okay with you.
  • Do not get a facial if you have done waxing 24-48 hours before your scheduled appointment. This may result in irritation of your skin because your pores are more opened and sensitive after waxing.
  • Make sure you don’t have any plans to be in the sun for long after your facial. Again your skin is very sensitive after a facial do to the deep cleansing process.
  • When booking an appointment, ask what kind of facials they offer and whether the aesthetician determines your facial based on skin type. This way you know what kind of facial you may be getting.

Right before your appointment:

  • As you continue to receive facials and use proper skincare, you will see less impurities and blemishes.

How to Properly Wash Your Face

-moisturizing your face with just water: sink/shower water usually has salts in it which instead of hydrating your skin, it dries it out. A great alternative is to use either mineral water which nourishes your skin or use a facial lotion.

-washing your face with hand soap or body soap: these have harsh chemicals which destroy the skin. The skin on your face is a lot more sensitive in comparison to the rest of your body. Therefore, you should use a cleanser for your face twice a day and make sure it is appropriate for your skin type.

-using the wrong skin and makeup products: there are different types of skin as well as different needs that are dependent on your age. You should not use your mother’s makeup or facial lotions if you do not have the same skin type or if it isn’t meeting the needs of your skin. First determine what skin type you have: oily, dry, combination, normal, or sensitive. Then, different products meet specific needs for your age. Someone over 35 may want products with anti-aging components whereas someone in their 20s should use products with SPF 15 or higher.

-Using scrubs everyday: First, synthetic granule scrubs are better than natural scrubs because they do not have harsh edges that will irritate your skin. Many people use sea salt on their faces…poor beauty choice. Sea salt is very rough on the skin and should only be used on rough ends like your knees, elbows and feet. Winter may have started to take a toll on your hair with the dry and cold weather. Here’s the recipe for a hair mask to get your hair back on track for the Spring:

In a bowl, mix

1/2 teaspoon Vanillia Extract

1 1/2 tablespoons Browns sugar

1/4 cup Extra Virgin Olive oil
You want to mix the sugar and oil first before slowly adding the vanilla extract. Massage into hair like a conditioner than place a shower cap to maintain the heat on your hair for approximately 40 minutes. Shampoo and rinse your hair. Style as usual.
Tips: Best to do this mask at night so that during sleep your hair nourishes itself.
Let your hair air dry and avoid adding any hair products or stylers till morning or until ready to go out
